Layering, done right

The blazer trick, a tee under a knit, and the one rule that turns a layer into styling for the in-between season.

Layering, done right

The fashion world runs on its own calendar. January gets the resolutions; September gets the reinvention. The shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris run back-to-back through the month, the magazines print their heaviest issues of the year, and autumn feels like a fresh start long after school is behind us. Call it the fashion new year.

It is also the true in-between season. Mornings still call for a sweater, afternoons call for a T-shirt, a skirt, maybe bare feet in loafers. Two seasons, one day. Which brings us to the skill that makes this time of year work: layering, and how to stay well dressed when the weather cannot make up its mind.

Layering looks simple on the surface: add a sweater, walk out the door. Good layering takes a little more thought. It is a skill, built on balance and proportion, and worth learning properly.

Start with the blazer. It is the easiest trick in the book and the most forgiving. Thrown over a long-sleeved tee and slouchy tailored trousers, it turns a basic outfit into one that reads as put together. By afternoon it comes off and hangs over your arm, while the tee and trousers carry the look on their own.

From there, a few combinations worth knowing. A crisp white tee under a knit, collar and hem left visible on purpose. A long-sleeved tee under a lighter linen shirt, worn open. Shirt on shirt, one buttoned loosely over the other so the cuffs and collars stack into the outfit's main detail. A V-neck sweater with a contrast-colour T-shirt underneath, just enough peeking out at the neckline to style the whole look for you. Socks with loafers, on purpose. A blazer over a knit instead of a shirt, for mornings that call for extra warmth.

The rule that ties it all together: keep the layer visible. Let the collar show, let the cuff show, let the second colour show at the neckline. That visibility is what turns a layer into styling.

Why it matters this season

Layering, more than any single piece, is built for a day that changes its mind twice. Leave the house in a sweater; by early afternoon the sweater comes off and the tee underneath carries on as a finished outfit. The look becomes a new version of itself, no repair work required.

That is the strategy for dressing through the fashion new year: build outfits that shift piece by piece, so a change in weather never catches you off guard.

Happy fashion new year.
